As the consultancy has offered two years of pro-bono consultations and global assistance, Dr Heap is proud to announce a continuation of these free consultations.

“Though I am a globalised thinker, I am deeply concerned with ‘grass roots’ contexts, especially the areas that feed into a school. I see education and school as serving to regenerate, stabilise, and progress the local area,” said Dr Heap, education consultant. “This then brings about both the enhancement of the quality of life of local people whilst simultaneously enhancing their employment prospects, education and skills of people, and the promotion of the equality of opportunity. In these times of the global Covid-19 pandemic, I am pleased to have been able to work alongside many caring and compassionate educators and administrators, and will continue to offer the services of my networks for free, throughout the summer of 2020.”

Dr Heap added further description to the services he provides. “I have provided solutions to schools for continual improvement of local education initiatives, rigorous program evaluation and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, HR processes and internal school systems. Second WebClip2Go video production system to be installed at TU Delft

Second WebClip2Go video production system to be installed at TU Delft

VEENENDAAL, The Netherlands, 2020-Mar-28 — /EPR Education News/ — WebClip2Go is proud to announce that it is in the process of delivering and installing a second video production system at the Delft University of Technology, just six months after delivery of their original system. This means that Delft now joins the ranks of Leuven and the Erasmus University Rotterdam as a two-unit WebClip2Go organization.

The enthusiasm with which the first system was received within the university’s audiovisual department provided clear motivation and justification for the purchase of a second system, which will be installed at its Aerospace Engineering faculty.

“Quite simply, teachers have found the WebClip2Go system very beneficial for their teaching load”, said Michel Beerens, Head of the NewMedia Centre at the Delft University of Technology. “Teachers like the system because it’s incredibly easy for them to use, the production values are exceptionally high, and it delivers a teaching resource that can be used again and again – making for more efficient content delivery.”

The WebClip2Go system is a completely unique approach to the production of presenter-based video content – turning conventional approaches to editing and filming on their head, and allowing non-professional users to create professional-level content.

Essentially, the workflow process associated with traditional production is reversed. An easy-to-use system allows for the creation of professional-level ‘templates’ – including all the transitions, animations, titles, colour grading, sound FX, and animated elements that you would expect.

Special education: Wuhan City School for the Blind helped over 500 children pursue their dreams

Beijing, China, Jul-19-2017 — /EuropaWire/ — Wuhan School for The Blind is the only school of its kind in Hubei province, central China. Not only does it cater to pupils who face enormous challenges because of their disabilities, but it is also proud to have a star teacher who has given new hope to the pupils.

China, with its huge population, has a large number of blind people. More than 5.5 million people are registered blind, among them, some 120,000 children. Though there are more than 50 special schools in major cities catering to the needs of these individuals, the task is never easy. Special facilities and teacher training is hard to come by and the children often feel alienated from society and lack ambition.

Zhang Long, born in 1975, volunteered to teach at Wuhan City School for the Blind in 2011. Though she had no experience teaching children with visual impairment, after seeing the difficulties faced by pupils there, she decided to change the course of her life and accept the challenge of making a difference to their future.

It wasn’t long before the gravity of the situation sunk in. As a music teacher she discovered many pupils at the school of 150 lacked the motivation to even turn up to class, believing their only career option would be to become a massage therapist, a common occupation for blind people in China.

Persevering, Zhang Long established a school radio station, a rock band for the most talented children, and invited performances from other schools. Eventually, the children responded to this new approach revealing both passion for music and hidden talent. One student, Gan Wenjun, proved gifted at piano, for which he won several national awards and even played with famous pianist Richard Clayderman in concert.

Among other successes, Zhang Long was awarded titles such as “Most Admirable Teacher in Wuhan” and a national honor “The Most Beautiful Teacher of China”,“I’ve never treated them as blind children,” says Zhang of the pupils. “It doesn’t matter that those kids can’t see. They can use their own ways to express themselves. I’ve never lowered my standards for them because they are blind, because to me they are just children.” Her approach seems to have worked and now pupils harbor ambitions such as to become a teacher, a professional singer and even an astronaut.

Wuhan City School for the Blind holds the belief that blind children are perfectly capable of the same achievements as sighted kids, given the right guidance and a little courage. Since its establishment, it has helped over 500 children pursue their dreams and been a cradle of many rising stars in music, sports, teaching and other fields. It aims to keep making contribution to China’s endeavors in special education.

MATTHEWS, North Carolina, Mar-01-2017 — /EPR EDUCATION NEWS/ — The Hose Company has announced a new $1,000 education scholarship. The Hydrauli-flex Scholarship is designed to assist students in their last year of study, in any field that will utilize hydraulic technology.

“We are pleased to announce this scholarship, which reflects the importance of exploring the use of hydraulics in existing and new technologies” says Robert Smith, Director of Operations of The Hose Company. “The field of hydraulics encompasses the down to earth world of agriculture to the highest levels of space exploration, and we need new ideas and new uses for this technology.”

While the world of hydraulics may not seem as glamorous as other scientific or mechanical pursuits we agree with Mike Rowe, from Discovery Channel’s Dirty Jobs “there’s still a thing called opportunity, and that is what students need to pursue.” Our scholarship supports students in the pursuit of opportunity.

The scholarship is valued at $1,000 and will be awarded to the winning student based on their essay submission, experience in the field of hydraulics, and recommendations from work, Co-Op, and community sources. The scholarship will be awarded without regard to financial circumstances. However, women in the field, and US Veterans will be given priority.

Students who are US citizens, or in possession of a current student visa, in good academic standing (3.0 or above) in their final year of degree completion at a public or private, 4-year institution, and in a discipline that would utilize hydraulics are eligible for the scholarship.

TEAM FROM BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, AND NAPLES, ITALY, WINS XPRIZE AND GOOGLE’S STEM-BASED COMPETITION FOR KIDS, “MOONBOTS”

LOS ANGELES, CA, October 6, 2015 — /EPR EDUCATION NEWS/ — XPRIZE, the global leader in incentivized prize competitions, and Google today announced Moonshot, cousins ages 10 and 12 from Brooklyn, New York, and Naples, Italy, is a grand prize winner in the 2015 MOONBOTS Challenge, also considered the “Google Lunar XPRIZE for Kids.” MOONBOTS is an international competition that encourages the next generation of space explorers and innovators by inviting kids ages 8-17 to design, create and program their own lunar rover, based on a legend or theory that inspires them about the moon.

Moonshot team members Sasha Cipani, 10, who lives in Naples, Italy; and Dario Cipani, 12, who lives in Brooklyn, N.Y., with his mom and team captain Sara Cipani; didn’t let distance and time zones get in the way of their shared love of the moon. They worked together online to create their video submission, and then built and programmed their one-of-a-kind simulated lunar mission together using the LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 robotic platform during Dario’s family vacation to Italy last summer. Their inspiration was Luna, Dario’s sister and Sasha’s cousin, and the idea that the moon we all share can bring people together — just as it brought their family together.

Later this month, the cousins will take a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Japan together to meet the official teams competing for a $30 million dollar Google Lunar XPRIZE, a global competition to land a privately funded robot on the moon.

“Team Moonshot showed ingenuity and innovation in their robotic building and programming, and were creative and imaginative in the way they interpreted their moon ‘tale,’” said Chanda Gonzales, senior director, Google Lunar XPRIZE. “Dario and Sasha were incredibly engaging, and their mission will provide inspiration for kids all over the world.”

In addition to developing their lunar rover, the cousins contributed to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education by sharing their innovation with underprivileged children through Associazione Quartieri Spagnoli Onlus – a nonprofit organization in Italy.
The kids’ competition attracted 235 teams from 29 countries, who entered phase one by submitting a written or video entry about what inspires them about the moon.

Teams are comprised of 2-4 members (ages 8-17) and one team captain at least 18 years old. A panel of judges selected 30 teams to qualify for phase two, each of which was provided one of three platform systems (LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3, VEX IQ, MECCANO Meccanoid G15 KS) to build and program a unique simulated robotic mission based on the moon tale they submitted in phase one. Can You Pass the Civics Test That Those Seeking Citizenship Must Pass?

Asheville, NC, June 29, 2015 — /EPR EDUCATION NEWS/ — Newly released Civics Handbook presents you with the information and the test to examine your own civics proficiency, and provides a study tool assisting children, adults and all students to learn the material. And while learning, you might be inspired to visit and see where some of U.S. history unfolded as Historic Sites, Places, Parks, Battlefields, Sites of Remembrance and National Treasures are listed in the book. Americana A Civics Handbook Second Edition was released June 20, 2015 (ISBN# 978-1514221563) by Mary B. Mackley of Asheville, NC.

There has been an increased frequency and an almost urgent drumbeat of stories reporting a lack of knowledge of Civics and American History in our schools. Even comedians have highlighted this issue while embarking in random questioning of adults in various settings. When quizzed about American History and Civics….the answer given may be incorrect (and pretty funny), but the point is made…there’s a knowledge deficit and room for improvement! While this may seem amusing at first, when you really think about it, it’s not so funny.

Our Sixteenth President, Abraham Lincoln, said…”I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any National crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts…” This book brings you the facts. The Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights; facts about Early America, the Original Thirteen Colonies, U.S. Presidents, the fifty states, National Symbols, U.S. Wars and more are included. Facts presented will help you have more understanding of the questions and answers on the topics covered by the civics test. Over 50 pages of historic sketches add an additional visual dimension in appreciation of our history.

Mary B. Mackley, a nurse for 30 years, embraced the role as teacher in working with her patients throughout the years. Her passion for History and Civics was formulated in her youth, in AP History classes through St. John’s University, and the time she spent providing interpretive guided tours and programs at a National Historic Site during and after college.

The book is available at Amazon, or through the website below. For more information about Americana A Civics Handbook Second Edition and the author, please visit www.civicshandbook.com. You can contact Mary B. Mackley at (828)606-7263 or civicshandbook@aol.com.

New iPad App Gets Children School-Ready

Parents are preparing to send their children off to school for the first time. An Australian Mother of two has developed a way to give children entering school in this technological age a head start by creating an educational iPad app.

Rebecca Monument said that she, like most parents were aware that basic literacy skills developed in the home long before a child starts school.

“I created the app because I wanted to give my children the best of every possible opportunity,” said Ms Monument. “I was worried as my kids weren’t learning the correct way to write the alphabet, that they would have to re-learn it when they started school.”

After the application was released in October this year Ms Monument approached a local teacher for feedback. Ms Tanya Burton from Whitehouse Primary School in Australia agrees that Writeforschool is a resourceful learning tool for young children, and that the app that will complement the introduction of iPads into the prep classrooms in 2013.

“The application combines many features that other similar writing applications fail to deliver, like a variety of accents and a choice of the writing fonts taught in Australian schools” Ms Burton notes. “The large number of fonts back up what is taught in the school curriculum; it not only includes letters and numbers but blends of letters.”

The idea came to Ms Monument and she began developing the iPad application Writeforschool after her children, aged five and six began taking great interest in playing the games on her iPad.

“I thought if I could make educational game for my children, they could begin to learn to write in the cursive they are taught at their school the correct way,” Ms Monument explained. “My children love the app and its exciting graphics that can be completely personalised.”

Ms Monument hopes that her application is able to help as many young children as possible get a head start for this school year.

Fall Festival Brings Together Holly Springs School and Big Cat Wildlife Sanctuary

The New School Montessori Center is hosting its second annual festival Friday, October 26, at its location on Sunset Lake Road, Holly Springs. Scheduled from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., admission is $5 for adults over 18, or $12 for children ages 2 to 17. Admission is free for children two and under. Free parking is available.

The theme of this year’s festival is big cats. In light of the theme, the New School’s “To the Rescue” festival is partnering with the big cat rescue and wildlife sanctuary organization, Carolina Tiger Rescue. The annual fundraiser will donate a portion of the festival proceeds to Carolina Tiger Rescue. The festival will feature an exhibit by the rescue organization, with an emphasis on conservation of these charismatic and majestic animals.

Why big cats? Children of all ages are fascinated by them and big cats are among the world’s most endangered species. The New School’s Program Director, Julie Schroer, emphasizes how the festival theme connects with the school’s mission. “We strive to foster a love of nature and a sense of individual and global responsibility in our children. Teaching them about global issues such as endangered big cats and empowering children with the knowledge they need to have an impact is an essential part of their development,” she said.

In addition to the Carolina Tiger Rescue exhibit, each class will present the results of its research into their selected big cat at the school’s booth at the festival. But at its heart, the festival is a celebration of the wonder and beauty of our natural world. “While big cat conservation is an important topic,” said Ms. Schroer, “It’s important to have a positive message to encourage interest in these beautiful creatures, so we want to celebrate big cats as part of our fall festival.” Indeed, the event will have a carnival atmosphere with live music, a magician, vendor booths, monster slides, a festival dinner, a bake sale and raffle.

Besides admission fees to help their worthy cause, the school has enjoyed sponsorship from local businesses. “The festival is a great opportunity for local businesses to show that they care not only about our community, but about the wider world as well,” Ms. Schroer said. “We are so excited by this partnership with Carolina Tiger Rescue. Every one can play their part, this is not just about the school, but about our community and its role in making a difference to create a world that is better for our children and for the wild animals that excite and inspire them.”
