Escuela Del Sol Has Hired A Design Firm To Help Communicate Its Unique Brand Of Creative Education To Its Constituents

Albuquerque’s Escuela del Sol had a problem. Even after 40 years of continuous operation, there was growing confusion among parents as to what the Montessori system offered their children, how it differed f r o m other educational methods, and what results they should expect. The lack of communication was making it difficult to maintain, much less grow, enrollment, and had caused some dissatisfaction with currently enrolled families.

Now if Montessori schools know how to do anything, it is how to prepare kids to be creative thinkers and problem solvers. So the school’s board decided to practice what they teach. They put on their thinking caps, thought like a business and came up with a business solution-applying the very same traits they strive to nurture in their students.

This creative bit of problem solving led them to Ripe Inc., an Albuquerque-based design firm that specializes in building brands and identities for businesses. Normally. But the chance to work with such a forward thinking school was too good an opportunity to pass up. Ripe had to be equally creative in taking on a branding assignment f r o m a school. But they did their homework well.

Working closely with the school they developed an engaging, informative, visual and verbal communication system to clarify and deliver the brand message. The message was developed through intensive workshops in which consensus about the key attributes of the school’s brand were uncovered and documented. The analysis and evaluation became an internal brand reference guide book provided to all faculty and staff members-so there’s common understanding and consistent language when communicating the Escuela del Sol brand.

It also became the conceptual platform for developing the graphics libraries, website, messaging system, and electronic template that facilitates the school’s unique educational approach. And for developing its award-winning print collateral as well. The school’s new logo & stationery design has been s e l e c t e d to appear in PRINT’s 2009 Regional Design Annual. Planned advertising campaigns will focus on specific challenges-like boosting enrollment, and increasing parent engagement in the school’s educational process.

Escuela del Sol has made it their business to enhance their communications and their profile within the community. And they expect business to be good.

Peoples Education Debuts Measuring Up for Level A/Grade 1

Peoples Education, a leading provider of supplemental educational material for the K-12 school market, announced today the addition of first grade materials to the successful Measuring Up to the California Content Standards program. This exclusive approach to first grade standards preparation includes two levels in one book to give teachers flexibility to differentiate instruction for a wide range of student needs.. The Level A program includes instructional worktexts, Diagnostic Practice Tests, and Building Stamina booklets for English Language Arts and Mathematics.

Peoples Education

“We took our time to research what would be the best option for first grade teachers and their students,” commented Diane M. Miller, the company’s co-founder and Chief Creative Officer. “Having two sets of lessons on the same standards allows teachers to scaffold instruction for their first-grade students and for second-grade students who need specialized instruction to bridge the gap from first grade to second. We believe this program meets the needs of California educators in a more realistic way than traditional materials.”

The worktexts include Early Level lessons to be used at the beginning of first grade and Bridging Level lessons for the second half of first grade and second graders needing intervention. The program helps students transition to second grade and prepare early for the second grade assessment.

Lisa Anderson, a key advisor on the project and K-6 Reading Specialist from National City, said, “I am thrilled Peoples Education is coming out with a Grade One version of Measuring Up. I love how these workbooks present the essential California standards in an easy-to-learn, student-friendly format.”

A variety of assessment tools are available to help teachers diagnose student needs and monitor progress. Two short Diagnostic Practice Tests, one for Early Level and one for Bridging Level, can be used as a pretest and posttest for the program. These diagnostic assessments cover the key grade 1 standards with 30 questions each. Separate Building Stamina booklets are designed as formative assessments to be used at the end of each chapter in the Early and Bridging levels. All the assessment results can be used to prescribe specific Early and Bridging lessons in the Level A Measuring Up worktext for a truly customized approach for every classroom.

The Essayist on the Controversy Surrounding the Model Academic Custom Writing Industry

A great deal of controversy surrounds the model academic custom-writing industry. Are the companies which provide academic custom writing services legitimate or not and do they support plagiarism? There is no single, clear-cut answer to these questions as the custom writing industry, as the case with any other, has the good and the bad, the honest and the dishonest. The question is how can potential customers separate the wheat from the chaff, distinguish between the good and the bad? This is an important concern among new customers, not to mention those who have previously had a less than `positive experience.’

There is no one answer to the question of whether custom writing companies are legitimate or not. The popular hype surrounding the illegitimacy of the majority aside, there are numerous model custom writing companies which enjoy extremely solid and well-earned reputations for providing customers with non-plagiarised, quality work which more than lives up to their stated guarantees. We, at Oxbridge Researchers Ltd., know that our network of model custom written academic essays, dissertations, thesis and research papers, is legitimate.

Whether you place your order through thessayist.com, ukessayist.com, dissertationist.com or any one of our websites, you can count on the following: 1) you will be assigned an academically-qualified and experienced researcher-writer; 2) while we employ both EFL and ESL writers, customers can always request that their work be handled by an EFL writer – we give you this option despite our complete faith in and absolute knowledge of our ESL writers’ linguistic expertise, linguistic proficiency and fluency; 3) your confidentiality is always guaranteed and your writer, despite the option of direct communication and messaging between the both of you, is never privy to your name or contact details; 4) the work you receive is always fully compliant with your instructions; 5) we never leave you hanging but immediately inform you whether or not your work can be completed within the deadline you specified; 6) you may rest assured that before you receive your work, it has been thoroughly vetted by our Quality Assurance Department for both quality and plagiarism; 7) we will never ignore your messages and customers can always get in touch, not only with the Operations Manager of the website through which they placed their order but with any of Oxbridge Researchers’ partners and top management people; and 8 ) we are a legitimate, UK-registered organization, with a presence in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Saudi Arabia and Egypt – so wherever you are, you have the option of physically meeting with one of our managers or partners.

Naturally, Oxbridge Researchers Ltd is completely biased in favour of the academic custom writing services it offers through thessayist.com, ukessayist.com, hdessays.com, dissertationist.com, phdessayist.com, aussiessayist.com, usessayist.com and phdessayist.com. We are a legitimate company which offers flawless academic model custom writing services. Our very natural partiality towards ourselves and our services, however, does not blind us to the presence of several other excellent companies in this industry. Academic Answers, for example, is a UK-based company which, through ukessays.com, oxbridgewriters.com and several other websites, offers customers a truly remarkable service. Both the service they extend and the work they provide customers is distinguished by their excellent, plagiarism-free and professional nature. As a matter of fact, despite Oxbridge Researchers’’ partiality towards its own services, it cannot deny that Academic Answers is one of the industry’s most important leaders.

Some readers may assume that Oxbridge Researchers identified Academic Answers as a fully legitimate and excellent company because we share a nationality – British. This is not at all true as despite the popular hype regarding the inherently dishonest nature of non-Western academic custom writing companies, there are some truly excellent ones, with Brownie Freelance Ltd standing out as a case in point. One of the most successful companies in the academic custom writing industry, Brownie Freelance is a UK registered company with a physical presence in London. The Director, a Ukrainian gentleman, adheres to a strategy of honesty. Hence, through customwritings.com, one of the several websites owned by Brownie Freelance, they openly admit that they originate from the Ukraine and operate their call centre there. They further acknowledge that they hire ESL writers, as well EFL ones. That they make these declarations is a clear indication of their respect for customers and potential customers, whereby they provide them with honest information as opposed to false advertising claims. That they make these admissions quite clearly shows that they are fully confident that they will provide customers with an excellent service and even better paper, irrespective of whether they are British or Ukrainian or whether your writer is ESL or EFL. They neither need to lie about who they hire and who they are as they know that they will provide you with nothing short of excellence.

That Oxbridge Researchers should devote so much space to acknowledging competitors, rather than promote its own model custom writing network, thessayist.com, hdessays.com, dissertationist.com, aussiessayist.com, ukessayist.com, usessayist.com and phdessayist.com, is nothing other than an expression of the ethics to which we are determine to adhere to. We will not slam our competitors, as others do, nor will we dismiss them as scammers. Our competitors are just that – competitors and not enemies. Besides, were we to label all in the industry as scammers, what would that say about us? What message would it give customers and potential clients? It would say that we, at Oxbridge Researchers, cannot establish a reputation or a place for ourselves in the industry via the services we offer through thessayist.com, hdessays.com, dissertationist.com, aussiessayist.com, ukessayist.com, usessayist.com and phdessayist.com and, therefore, have to badmouth our competitors in order to scare customers away from them. As for the message we will be communicating, it is one which quite effectively warns customers to stay away from this industry as it is full of scammers and that companies within disrespect the principle of clean and fair competition. This is not true.

Yes, the model academic custom writing industry is a controversial one with much of the controversy surrounding it resulting from the tendency to slam competitors, thereby labelling the entire industry as dishonest. This is not at all true as while there is a large number of completely unethical and absolutely unqualified companies in the industry, there is a number of highly honest, completely qualified and excellent companies as well. Hence, while Oxbridge Researchers would prefer that you place your model custom written dissertation, thesis, essay, research paper or term paper order through thessayist.com or one of our other websites, it assures you that should you choose to opt for another company, you will find some good ones out there. Importantly, do not forget to separate the wheat from the chaff while making your company selection. Our article on how to do so may be accessed via http://www.prlog.org/10275471-selecting-an-academic-custom-writing-service.html.

As for whether or not the use of a model academic custom writing services constitutes plagiarism that is the topic for another article, to be published soon. Meanwhile, please visit us through http://www.oxbridge-researchers.org or http://www.thessayist.com to familiarise yourself with our services and who we are.

College and University Application Management Service

While these are the summer months for students and a time for relaxation and enjoyment, countless are worrying over one of the most important decisions they will ever make in their lives – a decision which is likely to have a profound effect on their futures and career-paths. Which college or university should they apply to? While British, American, Canadian and Australian students have probably made that decision already and, with the help of their school’s academic advisor, sent off their application forms months ago, overseas students have not. Indeed, countless Chinese, Asian and Middle Eastern students, intent on pursuing their university studies in the United States or Great Britain are rather confused about where to go and how to go about it. This is where Oxbridge Researchers Ltd steps in.

While a British company, Oxbridge Researchers is culturally and geographically positioned to help overseas students gain admission into universities and colleges in the United States, Great Britain and Australia. The reason? Oxbridge Researchers’ managers and owners are geographically dispersed across four continents, making them accessible to nearly all and, have a solid and experienced network of professional academicians in place – a network which has the experience and expertise necessary to advise students on the universities most suited for them and to handle their entire university/college application process.

Oxbridge Researchers’ University/College Application Management Services requires minimal work and effort on the part of the student, leaving the work and the `headache’ to our academic specialists. As a student, all you need to do is contact us through http://www.oxbridge-researchers.org and we will immediately contact you back. A personal academic advisor and university/college application manager will be assigned to you. The selection of your personal advisor is determined by your personal preferences, your requirements and, importantly, your nationality or country of origin. For example, if you are a Chinese student, your personal advisor will have first-hand knowledge of your national system of education as well as of that of the country you are seeking to further your studies in. Similarly, if you are an Arab or Saudi Arabian student aspiring to apply to a university in the United States, you will be assigned an advisor who is knowledgeable about the Thanawiya Amma or the various educational systems in place across the Middle East and, of course, is (or was) a career academician in the United States.

After contact has been established with your personal advisor, you will be asked a series of questions pertaining to your preferred place of study (country and universities), your chosen major (if you have already made that decision), your tuition budget and your grades. Your advisor will then compile a list of the most suitable universities for you and explain what you might expect f r o m each – advantages and disadvantages. After you have made your selection (with the help of your personal advisor), Oxbridge Researchers Ltd will complete your application forms, mail them off to your selected universities and keep you appraised of the entire situation.

Apart f r o m the fact that Oxbridge Researchers offers invaluable guidance in helping you make your university/college decision, it maximises your chances of acceptance into your preferred college/university through the preparation and submission of a perfectly completed and written application form. As many of you already know, while your grades are the primary determinant of acceptance or rejection into your preferred university or college, your Admission Letter, Personal Statement and accurate and flawless completion of your academic application forms, exert a significant influence on the decision made by the Admissions Officer. If your form is not accurately completed, your application will not be considered; if your Personal Statement or Admission Letter are not perfectly written, engaging and expressive of your potential, your chances of acceptance are significantly reduced. Through the perfect and flawless completion of your application forms, Oxbridge Researchers maximises your chances of gaining admission into the university of your choice.

So, if you want to become all that you can be, allow Oxbridge Researchers to help you. If you are unsure which university is best for you, we will guide you; if you have already chosen your university, we will maximise your chances of acceptance. Taking out our University/College Application Management Service is an investment in your future and a golden opportunity for you to maximise your potential for success. Think of it this way: in Oxbridge Researchers you have a partner not a service; you have a friend intent on helping you succeed and not an impersonal service provider interested only in your service.

Optima Provides Stylish And Safe Glass Partitioning Solutions For The Schools Of England As Part Of The Governments Building Schools For The Future Initiative

optimasystems

The government Building Schools for the Future scheme aims to rebuild 250 schools per year over the next ten years. Its main goal is to have every one of the 3,500 secondary schools in England completely refurbished by the year 2020. Building Schools for the Future is the largest ever school buildings investment programme.

Optima has been working closely with many schools, Local Education Authorities (LEAs), contractors and architects across the country to help provide outstanding and inspirational educational environments which will supply the children of England with comfortable, safe and clean surroundings in which they can develop and flourish.

Optima has developed atrium glazing, glass partitioning, glass doors and custom advanced drywall for several schools across England. Optima restored the tired teaching rooms of Bishop Ramsey School, Ruislip, where a high level of acoustics was required. Optima’s Revolution 97 mullion-free double glazed system was the ideal solution.

For enhanced safety, fire rated screens were installed within all fire escape routes and corridors within the school for safety, achieving a combination of 30 minutes and 60 minutes integrity and insulation. Optima hopes to be able to install fire rated screens into every school in England, to safeguard the lives of millions of children.

Optima has also recently completed work on refurbishing classrooms and school buildings at Mundy Primary School in Heanor, Derbyshire. Here, Optima implemented its Mistral partitioning system due to its quick fitting time which meant the refurbishment could be completed without having to close the school during important term time.

A recent technical report published by PriceWaterhouseCoopers revealed that the BSF scheme is making excellent progress across England. New Obesity And Tobacco Prevention Products For Preschoolers And Childcare Providers By Cafe Prevention

cafeprevention.com

CafePrevention.com announces the addition of two exciting, affordable, and new prevention products – the Fit for the Future Toolkit for preschoolers and childcare providers and the tobacco education resource, Smoking Makes Me Ugly program, for middle school students.

In an effort to provide exceptional service, Community Partnership will do their best to accommodate those who need the prevention education resource order before June 30 for fiscal year deadlines.

Community Partnership has developed their business around creating and supplying parents, schools, agencies and communities around the globe with a wide variety of tested and innovative prevention strategies and materials. Each product is both educational and eye-catching, and will engage the target audience, whether they are pre-schoolers, teens or adults.

The Fit for the Future Toolkit is designed for children ages 3-5 and childcare providers. The childhood obesity rate for children in this age group has risen to 12.4%, and childcare providers offer the perfect setting to teach about, and encourage, healthy eating and physical activity habits. The kit includes a teacher’s manual, training DVD, children’s books, a movement CD, as well as games and activities to support children making healthy choices.

Comments from childcare teachers have been extremely positive, and evaluations indicate the children are remembering what they learn and the cooks are changing what they serve.

For middle school students, Community Partnership is proud to unveil the Smoking Makes Me Ugly DVD, a comprehensive youth tobacco prevention program. The target ages of 10-12 years old were chosen, as these are the ages the CDC has identified as at risk to begin tobacco use.

Physicians, educators and students themselves were responsible for the content of the interactive DVD, and features include an animated tour of the body, hosted by Cig Free, the talking cigarette, showing how smoking affects teens; interactive lessons, including what smoking does to the outward appearance, and accompanying handouts and worksheets for teachers and students.

Smoking Makes Me Ugly is a new approach to an old problem and has been enthusiastically received by teachers and student alike. Teachers report the tobacco education and prevention DVD is unique and unmatched by any other in its approach to educating middle school youth about the hazards of smoking.

Both the Fit for the Future Toolkit and Smoking Makes Me Ugly DVD are designed to deliver critical information in an engaging and affordable format. CafePrevention.com is a community’s source for high quality prevention materials designed to improve the health and well being of youth.

Café Prevention is full of postcards, games, bookmarks, door hangers, wallet cards and posters on substances of abuse and teen resiliency. Many have chosen our large postcard format over brochures, as they find it easier to read and it can be mailed or handed out. Marylhurst University Adds New Online MBA Curriculum Focused Around Sustainability

Marylhurst University will expand its graduate program this summer and offer a new online MBA in sustainable business to meet a growing need in one of the few industries that is adding, not cutting jobs, thanks in part to the 2009 federal stimulus bill.

Marylhurst University

Concentrations within the new degree program will address the most pertinent sustainability topics: renewable energy, green development, natural resources and public policy. Inaugural classes in the new program begin June 22, and enrollment is underway.

With $62 billion in direct green spending, plus another $20 billion in tax incentives allocated in the 2009 stimulus bill, jobs in sustainability are growing in almost every industry. The bill specifically allocates $500 million for the creation of green jobs. In addition, many states are creating their own green job initiatives.

“We have collaborated with industry leaders to create a relevant and compelling curriculum in sustainability,” said David Plotkin, Marylhurst University provost. “Each course has been written to incorporate the important issues pertaining to the green movement. Being in Portland, one of America’s greenest cities, gives us a strategic advantage to be a leader in this area.”

The new MBA concentration in sustainability becomes the second concentration (joining real estate) available solely online at Marylhurst. The university has the highest combined on-ground and online enrollment of any MBA program in Oregon. The program’s small, seminar-style classes provide a strong grounding in ethics, teamwork and communication to students preparing to become leaders in today’s fast-paced global marketplace.

As a longtime education provider to “non-traditional” students, Marylhurst was among the first to offer online classes (since 1996), and the university is recognized by the Council for Adult & Experiential Learning for its “comprehensively effective practices in serving adult learners.” This includes a 2004 CAEL Institutional Service Award for “outstanding commitment to the expansion of lifelong learning opportunities and for innovative efforts to improve access and quality in academic programs for adult learners.”

With a multimillion-dollar campus-wide reconstruction completed over the past decade, Marylhurst is undergoing tremendous growth, though that hasn’t changed the university’s commitment to providing a personalized education to all students.

“While the student population is growing, we are still maintaining small class sizes, adhering to high faculty standards and staying true to our commitment to developing ethical leaders,” said Mary Bradbury-Jones, accelerated online program director.

Debatepedia Documents All Pros And Cons Of Merit Pay For Teachers

Debatepedia has developed the world’s most extensive article on the pros and cons of merit pay for teachers. The article draws over 30 pro and con arguments and quotations from over 20 of the most outstanding editorials, opinion pieces, essays, and political statements on the issue. And, it structures these arguments and quotations in Debatepedia’s unique pro/con “logic tree” structure. The structure helps separate the primary sub-debates (and arguments and counter-arguments) in this debate, which are represented by some of the following questions: Does merit-based pay improve education? Does it improve the quality of teaching by incentivizing hard work? Does it help attract and retain quality teachers? Does it help weed out bad teachers? Does merit pay distract teachers? Does it create undesirable competition between teachers? Does it discourage teachers from going to needy schools? Can teacher merit be successfully measured? Or does varying student performance get in the way? Is merit pay fairer to teachers? Does it fall pray to principal cronyism? Does it encourage teachers to cheat? Does the market demonstrate the importance of pay for performance? If teachers should be paid more in general, is merit pay the best way to do it? What do past examples of merit pay around the world demonstrate? Debatepedia’s community has outlined the pros and con arguments and quotations that fit within and respond to the above sub-debate questions, making it truly the most comprehensive breakdown of the debate available.

President Obama has repeatedly stated his support for merit pay for teachers. Yet, with many priorities on his plate, it would appear that the debate will continue for some time, and even after any policy decisions are made, the debate is likely to continue for years to come, in the United States and abroad. For this reason, Debatepedia’s pro/con structure is particularly valuable in helping walk citizens and decision-makers through the many arguments and quotations so that they can effectively deliberate, make decisions, and make the policy that will guide education in the 21st century.

Debatepedia is a wiki encyclopedia of pros and con arguments and quotations. It is essentially “the Wikipedia of pros and cons”. Started in 2006 by Brooks Lindsay and William Wnekowicz out of Georgetown University, Debatepedia subsequently merged with the International Debate Education Association in 2007. IDEA is a 501c3 non-profit piloted initially by the Open Society Institute in 1999. While IDEA promotes debate in all of its forms around the world, Debatepedia fits within its mission to expand a new industry in journalism – what it calls the “in-depth journalism of public debates”.

The Book Of Dreams Project Chapter One Description

I was a little nervous when the students at Harford Friends School and I began our studies of The Underground Railroad, and local Black history.. After all, this was the Book’s first chapter, and uncharted territory for all.

As the kids settled in to the project,my fears were replaced with pride. After four three hour sessions, the first chapter of an original piece of fiction inspired by our studies had been composed. The story centers around a boy and girl, both slaves. The kids worked together, with no help from teachers or parents. I’m very proud of what they created. (click here to read) I emphasized to the students that there is history beneath our feet, and in front of our faces, everyday, everywhere. It’s just that many of us never bother to check it out, because we don’t know it’s there.

I knew that we would not have to look very far to find some tasty local Black history. After all,we live in Maryland!

As it turned out, we would Christen the Book Of Dreams by entering the first chapter just two miles from our school.

In 1867,a one room school house was built from wood, and stood amidst the rolling farm land of Darlington,Maryland. The school was for black children only, during the long years of segregation. The Hosanna school has been restored to it’s original condition.. It still stands alone with fields all around,as though little had changed. As we entered the classroom, there was a silence, occasionally punctuated by the creaking of a wooden floor board..The old desks were still in their original positions, empty and mute. A pot belly stove sat in the same corner as it always had when it was the sole source of heat for the small building. There was a quiet energy about this place..

It would not have taken much to imagine the ghosts of children and teachers long gone, learning to read, write, and add in this very room. Many of the children and some of their parents who had never learned to read walked 6-7 miles each way, rain or shine. Teachers in black schools such as this were paid about half of what teachers in the white schools were paid. The curriculum in black schools was very different than in white schools as well. The local board of education explained the disparity by stating that the black children would grow up to be farm hands,so they did not need the same level of education as their white neighbors children. The cool thing about today was, that we did not need to imagine ghosts.. We had Christine Tolbert with us, who along with her parents and grandparents, had been a student here as a young child.

We also had Gladys Williams who was Christine’s teacher, right here in the very room in which we all were now seated.

Today, they would both be OUR teachers. The kids listened well, and asked many questions as the ladies wove their stories of a bygone era..Later,Tamika Hudson read two original spoken word pieces to us all, in the voice of Harriett Tubman. Christine told us that even when she was a child, there had always been strong relationship between the Deer Creek Friends Meeting, and the Hosanna School, and surrounding black community. She said that today felt like a family reunion of sorts. Tamika and Gladys seemed to really hit it off,as did we all.The kids then put quill pen to Cotton paper, and the first chapter had been entered.

It was an awesome day, and not one that any of us will soon forget. I know that the Book will travel to many schools and historical sites, and I’m looking forward to seeing it take on a life of it’s own.

Book Of Dreams Project By Gandhi Hurwitz

“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” (Edmund Burke)

The Book of Dreams is living testament to good people who chose to act when the evil of slavery governed in America. Written by American school children in the 21st century, it will tell the stories of ordinary people, black and white, enslaved and free, who tapped into deep waters and together worked to create safe passage to freedom on the Underground Railroad for thousands of American slaves. The Book’s creator, Gandhi Hurwitz, sees the project as a way for children to understand that if their ancestors could work together in such a tumultuous and primitive world, so can they in today’s world.

Born at the Steppingstone Museum in Havre de Grace, Maryland, the Book of Dreams was “beaten out of the fire, carved out of wood” by Steppingstone’s resident blacksmith, Tom Alexander, and Masters of the Shop and woodworkers, Wade Whitlock and John Weifenbach, with jointing by Joe Cambria. It is massive, structural, permanent. Handcrafted entirely of iron and black walnut, it measures 30”x 36” x 9” and weighs in at about 60 lb. Visitors to Steppingstone’s Fall Harvest Festival on September 23 and 24, 2006 will be able to watch these master craftsmen put the final touches on the Book of Dreams, using traditional techniques and hand- and foot-powered tools.

The Book of Dreams will “visit” its first school during Black History Month, in February 2007, where the students at Harford Friends School in Darlington, Maryland will research local Underground Railroad history and write Chapter One as a parent-led and expert guest enrichment activity. Hurwitz, whose daughter Clairellen attends the school, says he was inspired by local Quakers who worked on the Railroad, including members of Deer Creek Meeting where the school is located. (The previous Meetinghouse in Darlington is believed to have been burned down by arsonists who objected to Quakers’ antislavery activities.)

After leaving Harford Friends, the Book will travel far and wide to schools along Railroad routes in Maryland and beyond, perhaps circulating as far south as North Carolina. Students from each school will research local Railroad history and write a Book chapter. Each chapter will be recorded on a large sheet of archival cotton paper and entered into the Book. Hurwitz has invited Tamika Hudson, an actor and Harriet Tubman interpreter, to contribute a written piece in Tubman’s voice. After the Book has circulated, it will return to its permanent repository at Harford Friends School where 8th grade students will write the last chapter as part of their year-long study of Harford County and American history.

Hurwitz calls Steppingstone the perfect birthplace for the Book of Dreams. Located on the site of a Quaker family farm believed to have been a station on the Underground Railroad, Steppingstone is a living history museum and interpretive center of American farm life near the Mason-Dixon line. Hurwitz found receptive partners when he first presented his vision to Steppingstone’s Director, Linda Noll, its board of directors and craftsmen. Under the Museum’s sponsorship, the craftsmen – all volunteers – have dedicated dozens of hours to building the Book.

The Book’s striking appearance was inspired by a design created by Clairellen Hurwitz. Two wrought iron, life-size arms – one shackled and skeletal, the other unshackled – reach across the Books’ black walnut cover. They are connected by a railroad track. A hand-carved rendering of the African continent rises out of the wood. A burnished iron North Star sits near the top. “Book of Dreams” is boldly embossed along the Book’s iron spine. You can view photographs of the Book on the project’s website: www.bookofdreamsproject.org

New Advanced HR Business Partner Programme By Henley Business School

Henley Business School has launched a new Advanced Human Resources Business Partner programme as part of its executive education programme. Aimed at senior HR business partners, the programme will help them focus on aligning the HR agenda with the strategic business imperatives of their organisations, on deriving competitive advantage for the business through delivery of that agenda and on developing their own strategic leadership skills.

The Advanced HR Business Partner programme is intended to provide HR professionals looking to move to more senior roles with the necessary leadership skills to understand and contribute to overall business management. Typically participants will have been charged by their organisations to set an HR agenda that is aligned to, and supports, the overall business agenda – rather than being responsible for a discrete area of HR.

Henley Business School

The programme is based on real-world business research by the Henley Human Resources Centre of Excellence into what is required from HR today.

Nick Holley, Programme Director, said: “Great human resources people need to understand what drives the business and focus on HR’s contribution as part of overall business leadership. One HR Director commented to me that there are many people with strong HR knowledge but few with the business acumen or personal strength to challenge and influence their peers. Our research with many leading international businesses has revealed what a good HR leader looks like and this programme will enable participants who work as part of a senior team to develop those commercial and influencing skills.”

The ‘Advanced HR Business Partner’ programme is part of Henley Business School’s new portfolio of executive development programmes aimed at helping organisations to develop effective leadership and the right calibre of managers to survive and thrive in today’s turbulent economic times.

As part of an extensive executive education offering, which also includes both customised and tailored qualification programmes, these management courses and leadership courses are highly practical, designed to create immediate impact and make a real difference back in the work environment.

About Henley Business School:
Henley Business School was formed in August 2008 from the merger of Henley Management College, itself founded in 1945, and the Business School at the University of Reading. It delivers business management training to managers in more than 112 countries worldwide with in excess of 5,400 people studying at any one time.

Host a Rocket Contest and Help Kids Reach for the Stars

You have read about it and heard it in the news – students in the U.S. are falling behind in test scores.. We need to get kids interested in science, technology, engineering and math – the STEM subjects. To get them involved you have to get their attention. Nothing draws more attention than a rocket launch – except a rocket contest. To that end we offer the national Reach for the Stars Rocket Contest.

Rocket launches are great for publicity! Use the contest to advertise your presence, build your membership and / or raise funds. They are a terrific way to get kids excited about learning. Running a local event is as easy as 3, 2, 1. Three – find at least twelve contestants and order supplies. Two – build and launch your rockets. One – award certificates and prizes. A step-by-step video and on-line help are available to guide you.

Compete locally. Celebrate nationally. The contest, for ages 10 to adult, is designed to be run by local organizations, is safe, easy and affordable. Everyone benefits. All contestants get a reusable Estes model as well as the unforgettable experience of launching a solid-fuel powered rocket hundreds of feet into the sky. Everyone involved receives a commemorative achievement certificate – suitable for framing. Each certificate bears an inspirational quote from Christa McAuliffe. Sponsors receive recognition and the satisfaction of Helping Kids Reach for the Stars.

As Homer Hickam, author of “The Rocket Boys” (aka “October Sky”) recently stated, “What’s better than a rocket launch to inspire young people? They learn about science, engineering and, at the end, they get to launch a rocket.” Everyone remembers their first rocket launch. What other activity can you say that about?

The contest is in its third year. It runs continuously and has annual deadlines for each celebration. Go to TheRocketman.net for deadlines and details. Our six national winners get memories to last a lifetime and bragging rights for generations to come!

Results from local events are entered in the national contest. National winners get their choice of launching their rockets at the Astronaut Hall of Fame and celebrating at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex – or they can celebrate with author, Homer Hickam and launch with the original Rocket Boys at the October Sky Festival in Coalwood, West Virginia. They will also receive a Space Shuttle Challenger – commemorative coin as well as other prizes.

Dr. Warren Layfield, Educational Director at COSROCS (Colorado Springs Rocket Society) and TARC mentor considers the Reach for the Stars Rocket Contest to be the “perfect training ground for kids who will go on to more challenging competitions like the Team America Rocketry Challenge and NASA’s Student Launch Initiative.”

Tickets to the Astronaut Hall of Fame and Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex for three national winners and their families are provided by DNC Parks. Lodging and breakfast is compliments of the award winning Country Inns and Suites by Carlson in Cocoa Beach, Florida. Without the generosity of these companies, the winners’ celebration would not be possible.

Your efforts will promote the Helping Kids Reach for the Stars program and honor the legacy of Christa McAuliffe – NASA’s first Teacher-in-Space.

Npower Events ‘Enthuse’ A Local School

Npower volunteers have returned Greendown Community School, one of the first schools selected to pilot npower’s ‘enthuse’ programme in 2007, the third consecutive year the event has taken place at the school.

During the recent two day educational experience over 260 Year 9 students participated in a range of

interactive activities designed to help them think about the impact science and engineering has on their daily lives. South Swindon MP Anne Snelgrove also visited the school to find out more about the programme.

Enthuse, which is part of npower’s Brighter Futures Programme, is a five year scheme designed to inspire and engage students aged 12-14 years old in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.

The students were encouraged to think of ways to improve existing products or design a completely new concept, before considering the very real problem of how we can meet and reduce the UK’s future demand for energy. These activities were followed by a ‘facts and fiction’ session where the students were given the opportunity to meet with engineering staff f r o m npower’s Swindon offices. Throughout the day, the students took part in a series of hands-on activities relating to the power industry.

The day ended when the school’s Director of Specialism, Gill Sarjent was presented with an award, which recognised the continued support and efforts of the school towards the highly successful enthuse programme.

Gill Sarjent said: “The school is very proud to be involved with the ‘enthuse’ programme since day one and continued participation during the last few years. The students have been given an excellent insight into what it would feel like to be an engineer. Also, the opportunity to strengthen our relationships with staff f r o m npower helps bring the activities to life and gives the students a great introduction into the world of work.”

Anne Snelgrove MP commented: “It was fantastic to see the students having such a good time while they were learning. This scheme brings science and technology to life and makes it real.”

Connor Wood, a year 9 student, added: “I think the whole day was good as I liked learning about different careers and I really liked all the “hands on” activities. My favourite workshop was ‘Bright Ideas’ as I liked designing a new product, which was completely different. I think we should run this event every day for year 9 students!”

In 2008 alone, npower ‘enthuse’ days reached out to over 3400 students across the UK.

To find out more about npower’s education programme and free resources for schools and community groups, visit www.npower.com/education.

About npower:
npower is one of the UK’s largest electricity suppliers and draws on 50 years experience in supplying electricity and gas. npower offers a range of essential home and business services to 6.6 million customers across the UK.

RWE npower has been awarded the prestigious CommunityMark f r o m Business in the Community (BITC). npower is the only utility business, amongst 21 other companies in the UK, to receive this accolade. The CommunityMark is a new BITC standard which has been created to recognise companies that are good investors in local communities and who have brought about real and positive changes.

The aim of the npower Brighter Futures programme is to inspire young people f r o m their first day at school to their first day at work. This is achieved by helping them to develop their skills and knowledge to make their own choices and empowering them to achieve their vision of a ‘brighter future’ for themselves and for the environment. npower Brighter Futures also includes our apprenticeship and graduate recruitment schemes.
